Meet Jens: The Inspiration Behind Project TransFrance

Who is the Person Behind Project TransFrance?

When people hear about my plan to run over 1,000 kilometers across France, the first question they ask is usually why? But my dad recently pointed out something interesting—people know why, but they don’t know who the person is behind this challenge. So, here’s a little introduction to the person behind Project TransFrance.

A Mindset of Exploration and Challenge

My name is Jens, and I’ve always been drawn to challenges that test both the body and mind. I come from a background in orienteering, a sport that’s as much about mental resilience as it is about physical endurance. Navigating through unknown terrain, making quick decisions, and pushing past fatigue—these are the things I thrive on.

That resilience started early in life. At the age of five, before I was allowed to start first-year school, I was diagnosed with an in-ear infection that affected my hearing. I was fortunate enough to attend a school for the hard of hearing, which gave me a unique perspective—learning to navigate both the deaf and hearing worlds. Adapting to both environments shaped my ability to overcome challenges and find ways to push forward despite obstacles.

Years later, a work accident nearly cost me my leg from the knee down. Doctors told me I would never be able to walk properly again, but I proved them wrong. Not only did I recover, but I went on to run, push my physical limits, and even take on thrilling motorcycle adventures—including a journey to North Africa in my early 20s.

A Life Between Two Homes

I have a deep appreciation for my parents, who have been a huge source of inspiration to me. I love them very much, and they, along with my sister—who is also an inspiration—have played a major role in shaping my outlook on life. Instead of buying a house, my parents decided to buy a camper van and travel all over Europe throughout the 80s and 90s. They did this for us children, knowing that these experiences would teach us invaluable lessons about culture, respect, and the beauty of exploration.

I’ve lived in Ireland for over 20 years, and while it feels like a second home, my roots are elsewhere. The place I come from is where I feel most at peace, almost like a ‘blue zone’—a place that naturally fosters well-being and longevity. But Ireland has given me opportunities, a sense of freedom, and a laid-back way of life that I appreciate.

Why This Challenge?

This run across France is more than just an athletic challenge. It’s about testing my limits, embracing the unknown, and seeing how far I can go when I rely only on myself. It’s about stripping things down to the essentials—movement, endurance, and resilience. Running self-supported across a country is a deeply personal journey, but also one that I hope will inspire others to push their own limits, in whatever way that means for them.

Beyond Running

Outside of endurance sports, I work in the tech world, where I’ve been an instructor for many years. I help people grow in their roles, but I tend to keep a low profile outside of work. I’m not someone who naturally seeks the spotlight, but I enjoy meaningful conversations and deep connections with the people who matter to me.

Follow the Journey

Project TransFrance isn’t just about me—it’s about the challenge, the adventure, and the lessons along the way. If you’re curious to see how this unfolds, follow along. And if you’ve ever taken on a challenge that pushed you beyond what you thought was possible, I’d love to hear about it. What’s the toughest challenge you’ve ever faced?
